Sunday 25th Jan. Choral Evensong 6.30pm

The introit, We Wait for Thy Loving Kindness, O God, is a celebrated anthem by Sir William
McKie (1901–1984), who served as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster
Abbey from 1941 to 1963. McKie composed the anthem specifically for the wedding of HRH
Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey in 1947. King
George VI had requested a simple service that did not exceed 55 minutes; in response,
McKie composed a work noted for its brevity and elegant simplicity. Herbert Murrill (1909–
1952) was a multifaceted figure in British music, serving as a Professor of Composition at
the Royal Academy of Music and later as Head of Music at the BBC. His Evening
Service in E was written while he was stationed as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park
during World War II. The anthem, Orlando Gibbons' This is the Record of John, is a
significant Tudor verse anthem featuring a solo narrator (at evensong this will be a
duet) narrating John the Baptist's testimony from the Gospel of John with choir
responses, originally accompanied by viols or keyboard. It is known for its dramatic
storytelling, deft word painting and changing textures that build to the phrase,
"Make straight the way of the Lord". Felix Mendelssohn’s Second Sonata in C minor
for organ is distinctive for its concise structure and the beauty of its melodic lines.
Like all of Mendelssohn's organ works, this sonata is deeply indebted to J.S. Bach.
